A wonder of unspoiled beauty, St.
John is the smallest of
the USVI and
the most pristine. The island's preservation is enforced by the National
Park Service, which oversees about two-thirds of St. John's land and
much of the surrounding waters as national park.
Donated years ago by philanthropist Laurance Rockefeller, the 12,624 acres
include several of the Caribbean's best beaches, 20 well-maintained
hiking trails, campgrounds, historic ruins, archaeological sites and the
1,277-foot peak of Mount
Bourdeaux. Rangers with encyclopedic knowledge of the
island's more than 800 species of plants, 160 species of birds, and various
animal varieties lead hikes throughout much of the park. St John
boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Cruz Bay is the island's
hub and only real town, and despite it's modest shopping and entertainment
offerings it does boast plenty of dining and drinking choices. It
also has several excellent galleries, a small mall, and the island in
general is home to a disproportionate number of artists and musicians. The
island hosts several annual music festivals. Transporation is easy
with many car and jeep rentals and a slew of ready taxis with fixed price
fares ready to cart you to the beach, town, or island tour.
